Spotlight on Sicily, Stromboli & Sorrento on board Star Clipper
Italy tells a different story every time you visit; from the cosmopolitan regions of the Amalfi Coast to the rugged charm of Puglia, each area holds unique beauty, captivating sights and unmatched charisma. Whether you’re looking for hidden side-street espressos on cobblestones, the vibrant energy of a bustling beach-side gelateria or the awe-inspiring and echoing chambers of ancient cathedrals, this eclectic destination invites you to return time and time again.
Slowing down and sailing around Italy and Sicily on board Star Clipper is one option which allows avid explorers to reach smaller and more intimate ports of call, getting a varied flavour of the country whilst undertones of history, nature, culture and cuisine simmer throughout the duration.
On 29th August 2027, Star Clipper sets off on her one-off 10-night voyage from Rome, where every port across Sicily and the Western mainland encapsulates Italian authenticity and allows guests to immerse themselves in the heart of the towns hand-picked for this voyage.
We’ve chosen some of our highlights from this sailing, showcasing the beautiful destinations that fulfil our objective of visiting smaller and more unique ports – a fundamental aspect of what Star Clippers is and always has been.
1. Trapani, Sicily – The City of Salt & Sail
Even in high season, the port of Trapani welcomes just a few cruise ships each month, giving guests the feeling of exclusivity unmatched by larger companies. Located on the island’s Western tip, Trapani is known for its historic salt pans – mirror-like water basins punctuated by historic windmills – and 17th century watchtower offering unrivalled panoramic views.
Trapani Top Tip: take a walk to the 17th century Torre de Ligny watchtower, which offers views as far as the Aegadian islands.
2. Shuttle to Cefalù from Termini Imerese
Located in Palermo, Termini Imerese in itself offers a few hours of blissful sightseeing, taking in the historic Greek ruins of Himera and ancient churches. From the port, a complimentary shuttle bus is available to take guests to Cefalù, a stunning coastal town brimming with authentic charm. Long, sandy beaches filled with bustling bars and restaurants contrast with the medieval streets of the Old Town. The 12th century Normal cathedral is a must-visit; Byzantine mosaics accentuate this striking UNESCO site labelled ‘one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world’, leaving visitors in awe of this historic masterpiece.
3. Sail past Stromboli from Lipari
On departure from Lipari, the largest of the seven Aeolian islands, Star Clipper will sail towards Mount Stromboli – one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Known as the ‘Lighthouse of the Mediterranean’, Stromboli has been constantly active for 2000-5000 years and persistently emits moderate explosions, spewing incandescent lava from its craters. With a backdrop of a starry night sky, and a front row seat from Star Clipper, this breathtaking event is a rare opportunity to witness one of the world’s most beautiful natural wonders.
4. The ancient heart of Agropoli
A popular holiday destination for Italian families, Agropoli is not typical of other resorts situated along the Amalfi Coast. With less crowds but equal charm, this sheltered fishing port offers authenticity and historical significance without compromising on amenities. Decorative gates in the monumental city walls are the entrance to a maze of winding alleyways, opening out onto pretty piazzas lines with palazzos, bars, cafes and restaurants.
5. Sunrise sail-in to Sorrento
Whilst a busier tourist destination than most ports of call on this itinerary, the experience of sailing into Sorrento from the deck of a tall-ship is unrivalled. Watch the clifftop, pastel buildings come into view, cascading down the mountainside like flowing water. On approach to the town, fishermen preparing their treasures from the morning catch signify Sorrento slowly waking up. Rather than feeling like an intruder, guests from Star Clipper slot into the morning hustle and bustle whilst the ship gracefully drops anchor close to the shore.
